Do You Really Want A Free Website?
There are the offers: "get a free website!", "design your own website!", "get a starter website $39.95" and others. Does it makes sense. Why pay more for a website? You gather up a few photos, write down some info, set it up so it looks pretty, and you're set. Maybe? Your Web presence on-line.

When I started in the business the websites didn't look nice. Then when it seemed like having a pretty site was necessary. And perhaps that is still so; it depends on your objective in having your website. You DO HAVE A PLAN, right? You don't just want a site because it's cool, you do have it to express yourself or expand your business" Right?

That is why it's not such a good idea to make your own website for free. This explanation assumes that you are in business (or are about to be) and want to stay in business.

Anyone with moderate computer skills and a text editor can create a website and many people can create an attractive website. But considering how important the Internet has become in marketing your business and the fact that each year more and more people turn away from the Yellow Pages (and other print media) for information on where to turn for their needs, having a website becomes more important all the time. A website that achieves your Internet objective, generating more interest in your business, more phone calls, and/or more customers.

Consider this: how will people find your website? (sound of bells ringing) Unless your business is very well known, you have to rely on search engines to direct people to your site. The process of configuring your website for optimal search engine placement is called "search engine optimization" or SEO and doing it well is important to having your site "found." Once you manage to get people to visit your site, what will get them to do business with you? When was the last time you looked at a company's website and said, "These guys have a pretty website so I'll do business with them"? No, often enough, price and the ease at which they find your offers is so important.

These factors are critically important in website design: search engine optimization, content, and navigation (within the site). Each of those factors have important sub-factors. These sub-factors might be as simple as contact pages, or drop-down menus and simple direction to what they want.

If people can't find your website (search engine optimization), they're going to do business with someone else.

If people are  interested in what they find on your site (content), they stay and keep coming back, if they can't find it,  they're going to look for another site and will end up doing business with someone else.

If people can't find their way around your site (navigation), they're going back to Google and to the next link in the search results.

Are you an expert in all three of these areas?  Still want to make your own website for free?
